NBA Trade Deadline Megathread

The NBA takes no time taking over the news cycle from the NFL, hell they tried to take it over during Super Bowl week with the Porzingis trade. The Hornets haven’t got Gasol as of writing this, but if they do… all 17 of us Charlotte fans will be happy with new GM Mitch. Onto the moves that have happened. Post will be updated frequently.

I not going to include any trades that happened prior to Chicago’s Melo/MCW trades last week. I am already mad I talked about MCW for this long.

The Knicks traded Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, and Trey Burke to the Mavs for Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, a 2021 first, and a 2023 protected first. The Mavs get a European big man that can shoot. Their fans now get to be weened off of Dirk with Luka and the Latvian Gang Banger. Not too shabby. The Knicks just keep on Knicking, unless they know they are getting a great FA this summer.. I don’t get this trade for them. Dallas are set up for the future. The Knicks situation seems murky. This is honestly a fair trade in my eyes, but I do think Dallas comes out on top 5 years down the line. If you took the best parts of Frank Ntilikina, Dennis Smith Jr., and Emmanuel Mudiay, you’d have one of the best young guards in the league. Sadly for the Knicks, that isn’t possible.

The Cavaliers traded Rodney Hood to the Blazers for Wade Baldwin IV, Nik Stauskas, a 2021 2nd round pick, and a 2023 2nd round pick. The Blazers get a little better with this trade and move a little more over the luxury tax. Hood will have to compete with Layman and Harkless for playing time. They may make one more trade because Harkless almost seems redundant now. Stauskas can shoot. He played well in November/December, but his defense pushed him out of the lineup. Stauskas should get more playing time in Cleveland. This is a good trade for both teams, Portland gets a scoring wing, while Cleveland gets younger.

The Cavs trade Iman Shumpert, Nik Stauskas, Wade Baldwin IV to the Rockets for Brandon Knight, Marquese Chriss, the 2019 Houston lottery protected 1st round pick, while the Kings get Alec Burks, and a 2nd round pick to make the money work. This is a great trade for the Rockets. Stauskas can play Ryan Anderson and just stand there and drill 3s. Iman adds some needed wing defense and shooting off the bench. The Kings lose Shumpert and add Burks. Sacramento gets a little more offense and a little less defense, but Shumpert would have been redundant with Harrison Barnes coming to town (See Below). Chriss is only 21 and can score, but essentially this means the Cavs get another first and a young player for Rodney Hood. The only downside is they have to pay B Knight, but they have to pay someone… I just wish it was me.

The Pistons trade Reggie Bullock to the Lakers for Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and a 2021 2nd round pick. Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk may be a great player in 3 years, but Lebron may be playing for the Heat again by then. Bullock adds some much needed 3-point shooting to the LA lineup. I love this trade for the Lakers. As an UNC fan, this makes watching Lebron dishing it out, instead of going for a dunk, a little more bearable. It is not easy staying up to 2 AM because you bet on Lebron’s team to watch him pass it to Lance Stephenson in the 4th Q. Trust me. This will be an easier pill to swallow. It isn’t Anthony Davis, but Bullock’s shooting should help the Lakers make the playoffs.

The Clippers trade Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, and Mike Scott to the 76ers for Landry Shamet, Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala, a 2020 lottery protected 1st round pick, the 2021 Miami 1st round pick, a 2021 2nd round pick, and a 2023 PHI 2nd round pick. 76ers starting lineup was already one of the best in the league, now it gets even stronger. This trade would be perfect for Philly if the got P Bev in it too as the 76ers need some guard depth/defense. The Clippers have now turned Blake Griffin into 3 firsts and 3 seconds. Pretty damn good business for them. Another solid trade for both teams IMO.

The Suns trade Ryan Anderson to the Heat for Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington. Ryan Anderson scored 56 points for Phoenix. The Suns thought they could make the playoffs at the beginning of the year. Now they are trading for the future, which is the right move. Ellington will be waived. Ellington’s shooting will be picked up by a playoff team. Johnson is 26 and shoots a decent average from 3-point range. Trading Anderson for a potential backcourt-mate to Booker is a good trade.

The Bulls trade Jabari Parker, Bobby Portis, and a 2023 2nd round pick to the Wizards for Otto Porter Jr. The Wizards trade a young, valuable 3 and D player for two one-dimensional 4s, but their owner gets to save 5 million dollars on the luxury tax. Hooray! John Wall slipped during his recovery and tore his Achilles. Also, he has an infection. He won’t be back till after the all-star break next season at the earliest. Sad to say, but John Wall’s explosiveness may never be seen again..

The Mavericks trade Harrison Barnes to the Kings for Justin Jackson and Zac Randolph. This trade is bigger than it appears at first glance because with the departure of Harrison’s contract, the Mavs can sign a max player this summer. Porzingis, Doncic, and a max player like KD make Dallas one of the best teams in the league next season IMO. The Kings get a valuable piece for their playoff push at the cost of a young wing in Jackson. If Jackson can get a little better at shooting from deep, this trade gets even better for Dallas. I love Zac Randolph, but he is nothing more than an expiring contract in this trade, although he could get some of DeAndre’s minutes.

The Pistons trade Wesley Johnson to the Bulls for Markieff Morris and a 2023 second round pick. I’ll take “NBA trade I don’t care about” for 1000 Trebek.

The Bucks receive Nikola Mirotic and send Thon Maker to Detroit, while Detroit sends Stanley Johnson, Jason Smith, and 4 second round picks to the Pelicans. New Orleans gets the picks they wanted! Bucks get a shooting big that adds a lot of spacing for their already solid offense.

The Clippers trade Avery Bradley to the Grizzlies for Garrett Temple and JaMychal Green. I am confused on why either team made this trade. I thought the Grizzlies would trade Conley after making this trade, but they didn’t. I like Green and Bradley though so good trade for both teams I guess..

The Grizzlies trade Marc Gasol to the Raptors for Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright, CJ Miles, and a second round pick. Raptors get better at the 5. If you’re keeping track, the Bucks, 76ers, and Raptors all got better starting fives at the deadline. Boston did not. The Grizz get some serviceable players for one of their franchise centerpieces. I would have wanted a better young player than they got or a first round pick for Gasol; however, I really like Gasol so I may be inflating his value. Good trade Toronto.

The Lakers trade Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley to the Clippers for Mike Muscala. Lakers need 3-point shooting and spacing around Lebron. They did that this deadline with Bullock and Muscala. Not sexy trades, but they will help LA with their playoff push. KCP and Lance can’t be your only deep threats in the West. I don’t know if I love or hate Lance’s guitar strum celebration for making 3s…

The 76ers trade Markelle Fultz to the Magic for Jonathan Simmons, the 2020 OKC top-20-protected 1st round pick, and a second round pick. Fultz has had one of the weirder NBA careers in recent memory. He loves Chick-fil-a, but can’t shoot. Let’s draft him with the 1st pick. That OKC pick may be the most traded draft pick of all-time. Someone fact check that for me. The Magic get a number 1 pick they can sit on and wait to get healthy for no real cost. The end of an error for Philly.

Copa Del Ray Semifinal – El Clásico

92-78-9 on Soccer in 2018 up 8.17 units

9-11-3 on Soccer in 2019 down 16.17 units

Barcelona to advance at -154 for 10 units.

Barcelona at -146 for 8 units.

Barcelona -1 at +118 for 5 units. Only play if Messi plays. Messi left the Valencia game with a minor injury.. He is on the squad list so I expect him to play, but if his injury is more serious and he isn’t in the lineup. Stay away. I will update this post the second lineups are announced. Furthermore, If Messi does play, I love this Barcelona play because that means Barcelona are not fucking around by playing a “less than 100 percent” Messi. Busquets was out for cards against Valencia, his rested legs will be added bonus for Barca.

Bale and Vinicius Junior are now fighting for the Real’s left wing spot. Bale may be falling out of favor quickly in Madrid. The problem for Real Madrid is they don’t have Ronaldo… well that’s only part of it. Modric, Kroos, and Casemiro’s workrates have been lacking this season IMO. Casemiro can blame lack of fitness. Modric can blame him being better than Messi and Ronaldo according to the Ballon d’Or. Kroos can blame Donald Trump. Madrid actually had more shots on goal the last time they played Barcelona, but they lost 5-1. Barcelona is just more clinical this season and that will show again tonight. Real Madrid could always get their corner goal from Varane or Ramos, but Barcelona could score a Messi free-kick goal just as easy. Real Madrid haven’t won a road game against a top-tier team like Barcelona since Ronaldo played for them. Beating Espanyol, Sevilla, and Roma away isn’t easy, but the Camp Nou is a major step up.

Manchester City at -344 for 4 units. City can almost sniff the title. Bernado Silva made Arsenal’s midfield look like school children. He should work Everton too. Aguero is in form. Silva 1 and 2 are in form. Sterling, Mahrez, and Sane will provide the width. City have won 3-1 the last two times they’ve met Everton. City are in form. Everton are not.

Super Bowl LIII – Patriots/Rams in Atlanta

68-56-5 on the NFL up 27.53 units

Went ahead and put my season long bets into my record. There were 3 of them.. Saints to win NFC, Panthers to win NFC, and Patriots to win AFC. The Patriots won at +200. The Panthers and Saints bets lost but I still won 2 units. Woohoo. People were telling me I was dumb to bet on Patriots AFC at +200 instead of Super Bowl at +375, but the Super Bowl odds for the Pats went up to +750 after the Dolphins or Titans loss. Can’t remember which one. Anyway, onto the Super Bowl.

Patriots -1 at -120 for 7 units. The Rams allowed the most yards per carry in the NFL this season (5.1), and were a bottom ten rush defense. I want to bet against the Patriots, but I keep seeing Goff’s 4 interceptions against the Bears every time I try to. Bill Belichick has been sending Sean McVay flowers. Mind games go to the Pats. Also, Wade Phillips is really going to out-scheme Tom Brady? McVay is really going to out-scheme Belichick? It could happen, but I sincerely doubt it. New England’s playoff rushing offense will be too much for the Rams rushing defense. Gronk is healthy and will empty the chamber as it could be his last game. Patriots will be ready for everything after losing to the Philly Special last season.

Tom Brady to win Super Bowl MVP at -110 for 3 units. If the Patriots win (they will), then Tom will win MVP.

James White over 5.5 receptions at -167 for 4 units. This number could be 10.5 and I would still bet the over. No Ragrets. Not even a single letter.

UFC – Fight Night 144

6-1 on UFC/MMA in 2018 up 9.90 units

3-1 in 2019 up 1.66 units

Charles Oliveira at -119 for 5 units. Oliveira has 3 performances of the night in a row. He has the most UFC submission wins all time with 12. Jim Miller was like what’s happening to me and then rear-naked choke time. Clay Guida was like what’s happening to me and then guillotine choke time. Charles is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Charles says he will fight 5 times this year. He is an animal. Oliveira deserves a top 5 fight if he wins this one against David Teymur. Oliveira’s grappling and flexibility get him the win. If you want to see Charles take someone bigger to the ground… Scroll/Look up.

Livia Souza at -217 for 3 units. Souza’s opponent came in 7 pounds overweight. The bout will proceed as scheduled though, with Frota forfeiting 40 percent of her purse to Souza. Souza called her opponent unprofessional. This is Sarah Frota’s first UFC fight. She may not have many more sadly.

Magomed Bibulatov/Rogerio Bontorin over 2.5 at -209 for 3 units. If Bibulatov can defend against Bontorin’s rear naked choke, this will go over. Bibulatov got knocked out in the first round of his last bout, but Bontorin doesn’t have the punching power. I am betting Bibulatov’s chin holds up here. Submission defense will be the key to this over and the fight for Magomed.

College Basketball Saturday – Lotta Virginia Hoops

70-62-2 on NCAAB last season and went up 8.95 units

13-13-1 this season up 2.29 units

George Mason +8 for 3 units. I bet against GMU once this season and they really surprised me with how well they played. Coming into the season I did not think Mason would do this well. They struggled a little in non-conference, but are tied atop the A-10 right now. The Siegel center is never an easy place to play. VCU has one of the best home-courts in the country. VCU lost at Rhode Island. GMU dominated at Rhode Island. Basketball is a game of matchups. Marcus Evans and De’Riante Jenkins are solid for VCU, but 9 points is a lot in a rivalry game.

Virginia -19 for 3 units. UVA has one loss on the year and that was a 72-70 loss to Dook. Miami has lost their last 4 games. Virginia has the best defense in the country. Miami’s defense has about 13 lapses a game. UVA is 16-4 ATS. Miami is 6-14 ATS. This line should be above 20.

Old Dominion -12 for 3 units. Rice doesn’t have the size or defense to keep up with ODU on the road. BJ Stith is a fun guard to watch for the Monarchs. He averages almost 8 rebounds a game as a guard.

Ohio State/Florida State/Dayton/Kansas/Charleston/IPFW Parlay risking 2 units to win 6.75 units. I always seem to get Kansas games wrong this year. Kansas, nobody likes a parlay killer.

Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga Saturday

92-78-9 on Soccer in 2018 up 8.17 units

8-10-2 on Soccer in 2019 down 14.22 units

Crystal Palace at +105 for 3 units. Fulham hasn’t won a league game on the road this season. Michi Batshuayi could be just the goal scoring threat Palace need. Michi could not find any form at Valencia, but with Zaha’s mazy runs leading to opportunities… he may find some form at his new home.

Dortmund +0 at -157 for 10 units. I love Frankfurt, but I think Dortmund is the only team with more weapons going forward than Frankfurt in Germany. Luka Jovic and Haller have have combined for 24 goals in the league for Frankfurt. Reus and Alcacer have combined for 24 goals in the league for Dortmund. The difference is Sancho and Witsel. Dortmund’s relentless attack will catch Frankfurt flatfooted a few times. Frankfurt leave too much space between their two central defenders for my liking. Werder Bremen capitalized on this in Frankfurt’s most recent game. Dortmund will take advantage too. Also, Frankfurt seems to allow players a little time at the edge of the box before really clamping down. Dortmund will take advantage of this said time.

Barcelona at -287 for 5 units. Barcelona have won 8 in a row and 7 in a row at Camp Nou. Barcelona scores the most goals in the league. Valencia scores the least. Messi has scored in 9 straight league games. Busquets, Dembele, and Umtiti are all out, but Coutinho may have found some form with a brace midweek. Valencia doesn’t have the offense to keep up with Barca.

Friday College Basketball – Michigan at Iowa and Davidson at St. Bonaventure

70-62-2 on NCAAB last season and went up 8.95 units

12-12-1 this season up 3.09 units

Michigan and Davidson are road teams tonight that are not favored by enough. The public has moved the lines already, so they are more favored than when the lines opened. Vegas made a small mistake in both these games IMO. Michigan should be favored by 8 or 9, Davidson should be favored by 5 or 6.

Davidson at -125 for 4 units. Davidson has the best player on the court in Kellan Grady. The kid was recruited by some big schools, but chose to go to the school his favorite player played at (Steph Curry). St Bonaventure lost a lot of experience from last year and that shows in their 6-12 record. Bonaventure has won two in a row, but those games were against bottom of the A-10 teams Richmond and UMass. Davidson wins on the road.

Michigan -5 at -107 for 4 units. Iowa has lost two in a row and is 0-2 against top 10 teams this season (Michigan State twice). Iowa has a solid offense, but Michigan’s defense is one of the best they will have faced. Defense travels. If you haven’t seen Ignas Brazdeikis play this season tune in. He is a great freshman that doesn’t play for Dook.

January Transfer Window – Pulisic to Chelsea & More

The noteworthy January transfer window transactions:

Christian Pulisic/Dortmund has signed an American record 73 million dollar deal with Chelsea. Chelsea will loan him back to Dortmund until the end of the season. Good business by Dortmund. Dortmund have an amazing scouting department. A lot of Chelsea fans will be popping up in the United States, especially near Hershey Pennsylvania, where Christian is from. I have some friends that are Fulham fans because of Dempsey… Chelsea is a lot easier of a team to be a fan of. Thorgan Hazard is rumored to be the replacement for Pulisic at Dortmund. Eden Hazard still hasn’t signed a new contract with Chelsea… is a move to Real Madrid looming?

Samir Nasri signed with West Ham after his 18-month doping ban. Nasri has played well at Marseille, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Sevilla. If he can find some solid form, he could add some needed creativity to the West Ham attack.

The 36-year-old-free-kick-taking Naldo has signed with Monaco. He adds some experience to a young, underachieving Monaco club. Thierry Henry needs his Monaco club to start playing better futbol if he wants to manage there next season.

Monaco are in the news again with the signing of Cesc Fabregas. Thierry Henry is coaching Cesc Fabregas for a Ligue 1 team. If that doesn’t make you feel old, then you should tell the kids on the playground about this site. Fabregas didn’t seem to fit at Chelsea recently, but it is hard to provide service for attackers like Willian and Morata, who look like they couldn’t be bothered to actually play soccer. Monaco is doing all they can to get out of 19th place and the relegation zone in France. Cesc should help.

Manolo Gabbiadini, who has the Peakeist Blindiest name in World Futbol, has left Southampton for a return to the Italian club, Sampdoria, for the fee of 12 million Euros. Sampdoria get some help at top to supplement the aging Fabio Quagliarella.

Brahim Diaz has been signed by Real Madrid for a 17.3 million Euro fee from Man City. Mahrez cost 60 million Euro and was always going to play more than Diaz. I’m sure some City fans would rather develop Diaz than play Mahrez, but Mahrez is no slouch. Real Madrid could use him with Isco falling out of favor and Bale being injured. Diaz could be a better Asensio one day.. and I love Asensio.

Real Betis has signed Diego Lainez from Club America for a 14 million Euro fee. Lainez is a quick left winger, who should add some needed creativity outside for Betis for the years to come. The Mexican Messi will have plenty of opportunity on the right and left wing.

AC Milan have signed the former Fluminese youngster, Lucas Paqueta, for a 35 million Euro fee. Milan’s future looks brighter.

Paulinho, Sandro Wagner, Leo Baptistao, and Talisco have both chased the money and gone to China. Espanyol will miss Baptistao’s goal scoring.

In one of the weirder transfer signing announcements I have seen lately, Burnley signed Peter Crouch. He will be a solid target man for them and a great guy to have around the club.

Leicester sign Youri Tielemans from Monaco. Youri is 21 years old. Hamza and Youri could form a solid young midfield for Leicester. The Kante and Drinkwater days are gone, but Leicester seems to be building a solid midfield again.

Crystal Palace sign Michi Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea. Michi did not do much at Valencia, but with Zaha’s service, he should be able to find some goals. Palace are hoping he finds his Dortmund form.

Newcastle United have signed Miguel Almiron from Atlanta FC. Miguel is a quick, solid passer that has been one of the best player in the MLS over the past few seasons. Newcastle fans are just happy they beat Man City. A record signing is icing on the cake. It is a league record fee for the MLS. He is a true #10 that Newcastle desperately need.

Arsenal have signed Denis Suarez from Barcelona. I think they signed the wrong Suarez… Denis will help their midfield I think, but he doesn’t seem to be a clear upgrade as of now. When Ramsey leaves this summer, Denis will play a larger role at the club I presume. The option-to-buy is smart business for Arsenal. He could go all Paco Alcacer. People forget Man City signed Denis Suarez when he was 16. This signing has to make Juventus fans happy because they are that much closer to getting Ramsey now.

Wolves have signed Jonny Castro from Atletico permanently. Castro can play left or right back and he never stops running. He is worth the 20 million as players with his skill and work rate are hard to find.

Valencia have signed Ruben Soriano from Alaves to hopefully find some goals. Valencia have more ties at this point in the season than I can ever remember a team having. They need all the finishing they can get.

PSG signed Leandro Paredes from Zenit for 40 million Euros. Paredes will slot in nicely next to Verratti. PSG will win the league with this signing (and without it). This feels like the first midfielder PSG has signed in years. Good business.

I think that pretty much covers the window. If I missed a big signing just mention it in the comments and call me dumb. Thanks!

College Basketball – Gonzaga at BYU

NBA Trade Deadline, Soccer Transfer Deadline, and Super Bowl coverage will all be posted in the next 48 hours. Stay tuned.

70-62-2 on NCAAB last season and went up 8.95 units

11-12-1 this season up 0.48 units

Gonzaga -13 at -115 for 3 units. The Zags have put up crazy good numbers this season, averaging 91.4 points and over 18.5 assists. They have beat WCC opponents by an average of 30 points a game. BYU is a WCC opponent. Rui Hachimura is good. BYU doesn’t have a standout player like they have in the past (Jimmer or Kyle Collinsworth). Yoeli Childs is a great forward for BYU, but he still has a lot to do to be on Collinsworth or Jimmer’s level. BYU doesn’t have the depth of talent to keep up with Gonzaga.. even at home.

Copa Del Ray, Coppa Italia, and English Premier League

92-78-9 on Soccer in 2018 up 8.17 units

6-7-2 on Soccer in 2019 down 3.81 units

Sevilla +2.5 at -167 for 10 units. No Dembele, Umtiti, or Rafinha for Barcelona. Let’s be real, Messi is all that matters. Sevilla won the first leg 2-0, but Messi didn’t play. Sevilla have lost to Barcelona by more than 3 only once in their past 6 meetings. This is going to be an exciting-up-and-down fixture. You know what makes it more exciting? Wagering a lot on it.

In all seriousness, Sevilla have scored 7 goals in their past 2 games (including one against Barcelona), thus it will be hard for Barcelona to keep a clean sheet. Sevilla are arguably the best counter-attacking team in Spain now that Ronaldo is gone. Pablo Machin and his 3-5-2 setup are made for 2-0 second leg leads. If Machin’s men get a goal here, this bet wins. Full Disclosure… I am always nervous betting against the best soccer player ever.. but as an old man told me at a blackjack table on a casino cruise yesteryear “scared money don’t make money”.

Real Betis to advance at -226 for 4 units. Betis got the much needed away goal. Espanyol doesn’t have the defense on the road to move on in this tie. Real Betis will score.

Roma +0.5 at -200 for 3 units. Bryan Cristante and Steven Nzonzi should play for Roma as they are banned because of cards for the weekend clash against Milan. There are two main reasons I like this play today… 1. Roma plays a lot better when Dzeko plays, and they win most games he scores in. He is in-form. 2. Roma needs a trophy. The Coppa may not be as important as a top 4 finish (which Roma is on brink of losing), but Roma is in a trophy drought and anything to pick up morale will help.

Chelsea at -147 for 2 units. Bournemouth have lost their past 5 meetings against top-6 competition at home. Chelsea fits that mold. Hazard has 4 goals in his last 3 visits to Vitality Stadium. Sarri said Hazard can leave Chelsea if he wants, Real Madrid could use him…

Crystal Palace +0.5 at -167 for 4 units. Palace are scoring an average of 1.4 goals away from home. Palace just beat an injury-depleted Tottenham and only lost to Liverpool by 1. I’m not saying injury-depleted to take away from Palace’s win, just saying it has to be taken into account when I look at the matchup. Southampton are hot under new manager Ralph Hasenhüttl, but Zaha and Townsend should do enough for Palace here. I think these teams are evenly-matched, so I will take the value of the underdog.
